Fixin the little things is a page where I can share family and handyman information. Basically, this blog is all about me. Shameless self-promotion: of my family photos, of my services, of my writing, of my future, of my amazing ability to come up with clever ideas on photos of my life experiences . . . And also, a blatant visual aide when it comes to colors, spelling, formating, editing and computer stuff.

What do you do if you smell natural Gas

Read this now so you will know what to do if you smell natural gas in your home or apartment.

Call this number from outside your home or apartment:
Utah: 800-767-1689
(then call the landlord or Bob)
If You Smell Gas...
  • Do not attempt to locate the source of a gas leak.
  • Do not remain in the building when there is a strong gas odor. From a safe distance, be ready to let our representative into your home or business so he or she can investigate.
  • Do not turn on or off any battery-powered, rechargeable or electrical device, including phones, garage door openers, radios, TVs, computers or any device that could create a spark.
  • Do not turn on or turn off any lights or electrical switches, or unplug appliances.
  • Do not use telephones of any type, including cordless, cell or landline.
  • Do not use elevators.
  • Do not position or operate vehicles and power equipment where leaking gas may be present.
  • Do not smoke or use lighters, matches or other open flames.
  • Not sure what natural gas smells like? Request one of our scratch-and-sniff cards and we'll mail one to you.
  • Share these steps with other family and friends.

Tips for cleaning your Gmail INBOX!

In the photo above you can see a screenshot of a Gmail account. It has 2 Tabs for my Emails - Primary and Promotions Tabs. Gmail sorts my emails and automatically puts Promotion Emails in the Promotion Tab. I decided a long time ago that I will use my Primary for the email I want to see and my Promotion Tab for Junk, spam, and promotions I don't want to see on a regular basis.
When I see an email in my Primary Tab that I do not want to see rather than delete it or mark it as spam and have it show up again in several weeks, I click on it and select it and drag it to the Promotions TAB and drop it.

A note will pop up asking if you want to do this for all future messages. I select YES.
I have noticed that once a spammer gets your email, they will continue to find a way to spam you so I put it in a TAB folder where I can easily delete hundreds of them at a time later. I do not waste time marking it as spam or going in and trying to unsubscribe because I have not found that is a permanent way to get rid of the junk email. Technically, my method doesn't get rid of it, it just moves it to another tab where I can flush and delete it once a month a long with all the other junk emails.

Now once a month, I take a look at my Promotions Tab and see if there is anything of interest and then I click to select all of the emails, 92 in this case and then I click the trash can Icon and delete them all at one time.
It just takes seconds to drag and drop the scam & promotion emails into my Promotion tab. Later on, it just takes seconds to go to the Promotions Tab and delete all of them at one time.
You may ask why I don't mark all of the emails in the promotion Tab as spam and my answer is - you could but I do get some promotions in this tab that I do want from time to time and of course when I see a promotion email in the Promotion Tab that I want to see regularly, I drag it to my Primary Tab.
If you have a comment or question, add it as a comment or send it to me in an email. Thanks for Stopping By!

October is Safety Month but read this now!

Normally I would wait until October to post a reminder for Fire Safety but when I hear about a story like the one below, I can't hold back.
I know how this happens. The smoke or Co2 alarm starts beeping and you don't have time to mess with it so you pull it down and pull the batteries to make it stop. I have clients and tenants who have taped over or put the alarms in the freezer to stop the noise and weeks later they call me to help fix it.
Consider these steps:
  • Find batteries within the same day and or replace the alarm and get the alarm working again.
  • Look at the date on the back of the alarm showing when it was made. Replace it - if it is a smoke alarm and it is older than 10 yrs. Replace it if it is a Co2 alarm and it is 5 yrs or older. This is the general guideline I follow. The unit still works but is less sensitive once it goes past the deadline unless it is marked on the package. (I've seen smoke and Co2 combos that warranty for 10 yrs).
  • If your alarm does not have a date on it, then it is at least 15 yrs old or older. (Within the last 10 years they have started printing the dates on the alarms). The alarms function with a part that is radioactive that fades over time and accumulation of dust can make the alarm less effective.
  • If you have no idea how old your alarm(s) are. Take a look at them today!
  • Make sure you have a smoke alarm in or at the entrance to all bedrooms.
  • Smoke and Co2 alarms are so inexpensive now. I found a Smoke alarm last week with a 10 yr battery for $17.
  • If your alarm has a serviceable battery, pick the first or second Time Change and replace the battery every year on that date.
  • Keep yourself and your family safe by talking about what to do in cases of a fire or emergency.
